Email’s one of the most effective ways of keeping in touch with your customers, yet the irony is that email addresses seldom get the attention they deserve. More often than not, they’re simply taken at face value. Businesses assume the cost of non-delivery for incorrect emails is low - and that there will always be another email to make up the difference.
Hoping the problem will go away
But that one failed e-mail could be from a large customer who’s registered with an inadvertently incorrect email address. They won't be buying from you - because you haven’t been back in touch. Alternatively, it could be the countless number of bogus registrations that come through your website clogging up your contact system with worthless information that you’d rather put off at the door.
Whatever the case, validating e-mail addresses - whether at the point of capture, or as a batch-cleanse process after - is the answer.
The way forward
Email validation is a fairly straightforward task. At its simplest you can run a syntax check that looks at the basic construct of the address to make sure that it’s included an @ symbol and that the “dots” are in the correct sequence. Where the sequence is wrong you can then prompt the person entering the address to double check the details to make sure that they’re correct.
At Postcode Anywhere we take email validation a stage further. Having run a syntax check we look at the domain server to check that it exists. Thereby helping to ensure that any email addresses that you capture are mailable.
