The Step Editor

When you edit one of the steps in your rule you will be presented with a few options. You can choose what you want the step to do and how it should be done. There are 5 types of step available.

The types of step available

Wait for the application to become active

This means literally what it says. Once you select the desired address Postcode Anywhere Client will pass control/focus back to your application where you typed the postcode in order to then insert the address. This is the step that does that for you. It should be the first step in your list.

Pause for a moment

When the rule steps are being executed it is possible that they happen too quickly. If this is the case you can slow things down for your PC to catch up with what is going on by inserting a pause. A pause can last beween 1 and 1,000 milliseconds.

Delete what the user entered

This step is also important and included by default. Before the address is to be inserted into your application the postcode that was typed to trigger the lookup can be removed using this step. Note that if this step doesn't appear first and the cursor is moved to a different field before the step is carried out it will not function correctly.

Simulate key strokes

This step will simulate key presses within your application. For example if you need to press Tab or Delete at a certain point in the rule steps you can add it in here. Special key presses are enclosed in brackets {}, otherwise the contents of the text box will be written out. For example, if you need to type "Entered by Postcode Anywhere" into a notes box in your application you can enter that phrase into the keys box.

Key simulation settings

Clicking on the Keys button will give you a list of special keys that can be simulated. You also get the option to set how many times the key will be pressed and whether Shift, Ctrl or Alt should be held down at the same time.

Write the contents of a field

These steps are probably the most important. This is where the elements of the selected address are going to be written to your application. The available fields depend on the chosen formatting options, i.e. the Company Name field is only available if you chose to separate it from the rest of the address. There is also an option to output the field in capitals if required.

Fields can also be preceeded and followed by key presses as in the key simulation step. The same procedure above can be applied here.
