Basic searching

The quickest and simplest way to search for an address is to enter a postcode into the search box then press return (other searches are possible if you don't know the postcode). The addresses relating to that postcode will be listed as below:

Searching by postcode

Each address is listed with company, building, street and place separated to help you read the addresses easier. There's also a handy icon on the left to distinguish between organisations and residential addresses.

Selecting an address

To select the desired address double click on it in the list, or press the up & down arrow keys to move through the list then press return. The selected address is displayed in all its glory in the bottom section of the search window.

Viewing the selected address

From here you can copy the address to your clipboard or view a map of the address via the wonderful Google Maps. It is also possible to view the breakdown of the address elements as they appear in the Royal Mail PAF database by using the Fields tab.

Viewing the selected address

The address details will remain on screen while you search for other addresses so click on the Hide button on the right to hide this part of the window. If you click on this by accident don't panic! The address can be brought back by choosing the Address option from the View menu.

Valid searches

When using the search box you can enter different parts of the address that you are searching for other than the postcode. Valid searches are:

U.S. addresses

To search for a US address you need to select the "United States" from the country selector.

Selecting a different country

Once that is done you can start searching for US addresses in the same way that you can search for UK addresses. The main difference here is that searching by ZIP code will bring back a lot more results than searching by postcode. A ZIP code covers a much larger area than a postcode so the result set may be quite big. Using the ZIP + 4 (if it is known) yields less results and is more similar to a postcode search.
